The commissioning of the Caldo hot gas filter at the Slavneft plant in Yaroslavl, Russia, was successfully completed on their sulphuric acid recovery unit. The filter removes the particulate from the SO2 rich gas at a temperature of about 500°C before the gas passes through the V2O5 catalyst where the SO2 is converted to SO3. This prevents blockage and capacity restrictions of the plant. The filter is processing the specified volume of gas, at a lower pressure drop than design, and is achieving the guaranteed output level of <1mg/m3 of solids. Interest in, and further sales of, this system are increasing not only because of the unit’s performance and ruggedness, but because of the energy savings involved when the gas does not need to be cooled before high efficiency filtering. This technology offers high efficiency particulate removal at high temperatures, because its high quality ceramic filters are able to do duties previously considered only for ESPs.
