CHEMICALS PRODUCTION - Sulphuric Acid Plant SO2 Tail Gas
In earlier designs of H2SO4 plants they used the ‘single absorbtion’ process, which had only 1 absorbtion tower and lower conversion rates of SO2 . Many plants required to meet lower levels of SO2 emissions chose to scrub the exit or tail gas rather than reduce emissions by changing to double absorbtion.
Tail gas scrubbing is most often done by using Ammonia, which reacts with the SO2 , thus preventing it’s emission as a gaseous pollutant. The process does generate mist form salts which need to be removed to ensure total emission control.
