NITROGEN FERTILISERS / UREA PRILLING TOWER DEMISTERS & COALESCERS FOR LOW PRESSURE LOSS FILTRATION AND CONCURRENT NH3 ABSORBTION.
PROCESS INFORMATION
2 towers each with exit of 550,000 NM³/hr at 20º C, via 6 roof mounted fans above horseshoe-shaped housing round the top of the tower (area 96m²).Fan size would only allow a *p of 40 mm. WG maximum.Inlet loads said to be 27 mg/m³ of Urea & 27 mg/m³ of NH3 (Note – Actual emissions were higher). This was a Soviet Union plant.
PROBLEMS TO SOLVE
The towers were old and could not take the weight of the numbers of candles needed to operate at such low *p. The towers actually had much higher NH3 exit concentrations than in the west and so scrubbing, as well as filtering, was required.
DESIGN SOLUTION
- 1ST stage ‘Becoil’ Demister / Coalescer in 304 Stainless Steel or special alloy such as Sandvik 2RK65 , irrigated with 40 to 50% urea solution from above.
- 2nd stage ‘Becoil’ Demister in 304 Stainless Steel, with demineralised water wash.
We guaranteed:
- Pressure drop: 40 mm. WG maximum
- Efficiency : NH3 Overall 5 mg/m³ maximum
- Efficiency : Urea Overall 5 mg/m³ maximum
Result : Efficiency : Urea Overall 5 mg/m³ maximumThe inlet loads were significantly higher than the design values given, e.g. 140 – 250mg/m3 of NH3, and 80 – 120mg/m3 of Urea. However, best NH3 exit achieved was 30mg/m3 which is still very good in the circumstances.
